List of Shipping Companies in Vietnam: Top 13 Forwarders (2023) (1)

Exploring your options to shift production from China to Vietnam? You might find that your existing freight forwarder network doesn’t even operate in the latter. To make things a bit easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of shipping companies based in Vietnam. In addition, we also cover the following:

  • What should I look for when selecting a freight forwarder?
  • How do I get the cheapest freight rate from Vietnam?
  • I need to ship materials and components from China to Vietnam. How do I arrange that?

What should I look for when selecting a freight forwarder?

You don’t necessarily need to work with a forwarder that is headquartered in Vietnam, to import goods from the country. That said, far from all freight forwarders operate in Vietnam, which is, therefore, the primary selection criteria.

Keep in mind that most forwarders covering Vietnam don’t have their own offices or warehouses there, but work closely with local agencies. There’s nothing odd with this setup. It’s simply the way the logistics industry works. Once you’ve worked out whether your forwarder can manage shipments from Vietnam, I suggest you ask them the following questions:

  • Which ports in Vietnam are covered in your network?
  • Do they have their own offices in Vietnam, or do they work with third parties?
  • Do they offer land transport between Vietnam and China?
  • Do they offer domestic land transportation?
  • Do you handle both sea and air freight?
  • Do you offer LCL shipping?

How do I get the cheapest freight rate from Vietnam?

The truth is that there are no ‘cheap freight forwarders’ or ‘discount shipping companies’ in Vietnam, or elsewhere in the world. Shipping prices constantly go up and down and are entirely based on the incoterm.

For example, a CIF quotation is always lower than a DAP or DDP quotation – but ultimately you’ll end up paying the same.

Further, it’s hard to project how Vietnam shipping prices will change in the future. The country is in the midst of a major export boom, and it’s likely that more companies will shift to Vietnam in the coming years due to the trade war.

Yet, it’s too early to tell how shipping costs will be affected.

I need to ship materials and components from China to Vietnam. How do I arrange that?

Most companies importing from Vietnam will find that materials and components are not as readily available in here as in China. As such, importing materials from Vietnam’s northern neighbor is sometimes inevitable – even in the textiles and furniture industry.

Most Vietnamese factories already have a network of domestic and international subcontractors, many of which are Chinese. You can either instruct your Vietnamese manufacturing partner to procure materials (e.g. textile fabrics or steel) from a supplier in their existing network – or source one on your own.

Either way, the Vietnamese company always acts as the importer of record (only a legal entity in Vietnam can act as an importer) and import duties and VAT also apply.
